La Laguna - Tenerife

La Laguna city, placed in the north of the Tenerife Island, was founded about 1496 by Alonso Fernández de Lugo. It was the capital of the island after the conclusion of the Spanish conquest of the islands. In the 18th century the capital was moved to Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1723. Santa Cruz has since been the capital of the island of Tenerife.

Main spots in La Laguna:

- Historic city-centre. For an interesting cultural visit, we would recommend a walk through the streets of La Laguna; there is so much to see that it is impossible to establish a single route.
- The international airport at Los Rodeos was opened and became the most used airport on the island until Reina Sofía Airport was built in the south of the island.
- The University of La Laguna was founded in 1701, one of the oldest universities in Spain.
- Shopping area. The city has the most attractive European-style shopping district in the Canaries. We offer an alternative to the covered shopping malls of other towns: You can find a wide range of quality outlets, from famous brands to locally produced goods.

In December 1999, Unesco declared the city a World Heritage Site and several streets of historical significance are now closed to automobile traffic.

Just a few recommendations related to the weather in Tenerife: As we have so many different microclimates in the Island, it is better to be know in advance a few things:

- Use sunscreen. The easiest way to distinguish a tourist from locals is the colour: Pinks and tanned. If you want to come back with a good colour you may use frequently suncreen, especially in beaches and pools.

- Visiting Teide. If you plan to visit mount Teide, remember it’s about 3718 m (12198 feet): It’s really cold there. No matter how hard you are, shorts and t-shirt won’t be enough.

- Extra clothes. If you travel around the Island, don’t forget to carry a pull-over, the temperature can just drop in a few minutes. In the north side of Tenerife, the area of La Laguna is especially cold.If you want to have a look to the weather in Tenerife over the year (temperature, sun hours, rain fall), just click here.
