Teide view from la Orotava

If Tenerife is famous for anything, apart from being an exceptional tourist resort, it is for possessing the highest mountain in Spain and one of the most highest in the European Union. The area which surrounds Teide is of volcanic origin and created a ‘lunar’ landscape which is both spectacular and beautiful. In this privileged spot there are many species of animal and plant that only exist in the Canary Islands such as the Teide Finch, the most beautiful bird to be seen here, or the Teide violet. It has been necessary to institutionalise these treasures of nature in order to preserve them, and thus the National Park of the revines of Teide was created. The meteorological Observatory and the International Astrophysics Observatory are to be found at one end of the valley. It is possible to be really close to the summit by the teleferico, like a ski-lift. The view at 3,555 metres (11663 feet) is a must-see: In a clear day, or even through the sea of clouds it is quite easy to spot most of the Canary Islands at simple sight.

Today the Teide National Park has been inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List (official page here). The north city of La Laguna is the other place in Tenerife already inscribed in the same list.

Just a few recommendations related to the weather in Tenerife: As we have so many different microclimates in the Island, it is better to be know in advance a few things:

- Use sunscreen. The easiest way to distinguish a tourist from locals is the colour: Pinks and tanned. If you want to come back with a good colour you may use frequently suncreen, especially in beaches and pools.

- Visiting Teide. If you plan to visit mount Teide, remember it’s about 3718 m (12198 feet): It’s really cold there. No matter how hard you are, shorts and t-shirt won’t be enough.

- Extra clothes. If you travel around the Island, don’t forget to carry a pull-over, the temperature can just drop in a few minutes. In the north side of Tenerife, the area of La Laguna is especially cold.If you want to have a look to the weather in Tenerife over the year (temperature, sun hours, rain fall), just click here.

Tenerife according to Wikipedia

Tenerife is the largest of the seven Canary islands and placed in the Atlantic Ocean close to the coast of Africa. The island has a volcanic origin, and it has the highest point of Spain, Teide, with 3,718 meters. The following photo was taken by the NASA:

Even if the island has only about 75 Km (50 Miles) from North to South, there is an amazing variety of different weathers. Because of that, tourism is more concentrated in the south of the Island (bottom right corner in the photo), where the weather is hotter and drier, especially around playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos.
